Brazilian journalists from print, TV and online are welcome to participate in a new four-week online course, entitled "Digital Tools for Effective Public Service Journalism" which will be run in Portuguese from January 13 to February 2, 2011. Deadline to apply is December 17, 2010.

During the course, participants will learn how to use digital tools and techniques in reporting and publishing information on such topics ranging from sanitation to education to public health, all areas posing critical challenges to impoverished communities in Brazil.

The online course will admit 30-35 participants. The best 10 will be brought to Sao Paulo for further training.

The participants will be introduced to such tools and techniques as refined online search, map mashups to track such things as pollution sources, preparing photos and videos for upload to websites and blogs, and how to create a blog and a wiki.

At the end of the course, 10 journalists each will have produced a report or Web site, or a proposal for a project, using the skills learned. And each will have skills allowing them to better cover issues affecting Brazil’s poor and publish multimedia packages in their daily work.
