Turkish and Armenian journalists are invited to apply for a five-week online course, “Freedom of Expression in the Digital Age,” which will be held from January 17 to February 20. Deadline to apply is December 5.

During the five-week course, participants will develop skills in producing multimedia content, writing and blogging for the Web, and effectively and ethically managing online communities that attract constructive, responsible dialogue among their audiences. They will examine how social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are being used in news coverage and how journalists can best make use of the dizzying array of citizen-produced content in ways that promote intercultural understanding.

The online course is the first part of a program that will bring together media professionals from Armenia, Turkey and the United States. The five week online course will guide 22 selected Armenian and Turkish media professionals as they work in pairs - one Armenian with one Turk - to develop cross-border reporting projects.

The twelve best journalists, six Turks and six Armenians, will then take part in a four-week, U.S.-based program with media internships as they continue to develop their cross-border projects. An additional 15 of the core group's colleagues in each country, plus six U.S. media professionals who hosted the internships will join the group of 12 for conferences that the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the core group of participants and ICFJ's local partners will organize to demonstrate best journalistic practices. The conferences will take place in Ankara and Yerevan.

The conferences will be followed by a second online course - in investigative reporting - with the core group and additional English-speaking journalists from both countries. Applicants should be able to communicate well in English; interpretation is not provided. All expenses for this program are paid.
