    Latin America and the Caribbean is the world´s most crime-ridden region. Its 2012 murder rate of nearly 24 per 100,000 citizens is amongst the world´s highest. One in five Latin Americans report having been victim of a robbery over the past year. The cost of crime varies from 2 percent of GDP to over 10 percent. And while about 30 percent of Latin America´s murders are linked to drug trafficking, Latin America has been violent for decades, even before the rise of major cartels: its murder rate has been five to eight times higher than that of Europe and Asia since the 1950s.

  • ICFJ Anywhere is offering the first in a series of webinars, supported by Dow Jones. Digital and mobile security is critically important for journalists and bloggers who work in challenging conditions. This webinar will highlight a combination of new and classic tools to protect journalists in the digital era.

  • Join a select group of Indian journalists and journalism students in “Video Storytelling – A Hands-on, Interactive Online Course.” This six-week seminar, offered by the 9.9 School of Communication and supported by the International Center for Journalists, will run from December 2, 2013, to January 10, 2014. Qualified candidates will receive a full scholarship. The best participants will win a week-long coaching session with a video collaborator for The New York Times’ India Ink.

  • The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is offering a six-week online course on covering conflict: challenges, opportunities and best practices for Egyptian journalists. The course will be held from November 18, 2013, to December 29, 2013. The deadline to apply is November 8, 2013.

  • The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is offering an online course, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the support of the Inter American Press Association (IAPA).

  • African journalists are invited to participate in a six-week online course: “Covering Development in Africa.” The course will be held from May 20, 2013, to June 28, 2013. The deadline to apply is May 6, 2013.

  • Join a select group of journalists throughout the world in a new online seminar sharing insights, resources and strategies for reporting on religion and politics. “Coverage of Religion & Politics,” is a six-week seminar offered by the International Center for Journalists from January 7 to February 15. It will examine effective ways of reporting on sensitive topics like religion and politics around the world.

  • The International Center for Journalists is offering an online course on the use of digital tools in public service reporting, which will be held from November 21 to December 26, 2012.

    The online course is the first part of a program that will bring together professional and citizen journalists with civil society actors from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, West Bank/Gaza and Yemen. The six-week online course will guide 60 participants from these countries to work on ideas for multimedia public service journalism projects.

  • The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will offer two online courses in English and Spanish on covering marketing concepts such as how to plan for retirement, understanding your 401k, stock and bond markets, mutual funds and private and public companies, among others.

    These courses will be available to U.S. journalists who report in minority communities. The online courses will take place from October 15, 2012 through December 9, 2012. Selected participants will be asked to propose a project that they will work on developing through the length of the course. A mentoring period to help participants finalize their projects will take place from December 10, 2012 until January 18, 2013.

  • Join a select group of journalists throughout the world in a new online seminar sharing insights, resources and strategies for reporting on gender, health, education and religion. “International Coverage of Gender, Health, Education and Religion," a six-week seminar offered by the International Center for Journalists from September 24 to November 2, will examine effective ways of reporting on gender, health, education and religion.
